How Long Does an India Visa Take for US Citizens?
India eVisas usually take 3–5 business days for US citizens, while regular visas through VFS take 5–10. Here's when to apply and what causes delays.

Planning a trip to India? The first question most travelers ask is how long the visa will take. For US citizens, the answer depends on which visa you apply for. An India eVisa usually takes about 3–5 business days. A regular (paper) visa through VFS Global usually takes 5–10 business days. Employment and other long-term visas can take several weeks.

These are typical timelines, not guarantees. Processing can take longer around holidays and peak travel seasons.
India eVisa: the fastest option for most US travelers
US citizens can apply for an India eVisa entirely online. You don’t need to mail your passport, and approval arrives by email.
Key timing rules from the Government of India:
- You must apply at least 4 days before your arrival date.
- The 1-year and 5-year e-Tourist Visa and the e-Business Visa can be requested up to 120 days before travel.
- The 30-day e-Tourist Visa can be requested up to 30 days before travel.
- After payment, the status can take up to 2 hours to update. Don’t submit a second application during that time.
Most eVisas are approved within a few business days. Still, 4 days is the minimum, not a recommendation. We suggest applying at least 2 weeks before your flight so there’s time to fix a rejected photo or a mismatched passport scan.
Note: The Consulate General of India in Houston does not process eVisas. All eVisa questions go through the official eVisa portal.
Regular (paper) India visa through VFS Global
Some travelers need a regular visa instead of an eVisa. Common reasons are longer stays, employment, certain business activities, or not qualifying for an eVisa. Paper visas are submitted through VFS Global, which works for the Indian consulates.
If you live in Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Colorado, or Nebraska, your application falls under the Consulate General of India in Houston. It is submitted through VFS Global’s Houston center.
Total time for a regular visa includes more than the consulate’s review:
- Preparing forms, photos, and supporting documents
- VFS intake and document check
- Consular review
- Return shipping of your passport
That’s why we recommend planning at least 2 weeks for a regular tourist or business visa. Plan 4–6 weeks for an employment visa.
What slows down an India visa application
Most delays aren’t caused by the consulate. They come from small mistakes in the file:
- Photo problems: wrong size, shadows, glasses, or a home-printed photo
- Address mismatch: the address on your application must match your driver’s license or state ID
- Passport validity: your passport needs at least 6 months of validity beyond your stay and 2 blank visa pages
- Missing documents for applicants of Indian origin: naturalized US citizens born in India usually need a renunciation certificate or a canceled Indian passport
- Business visa paperwork: missing invitation letters or business cards
- Printing errors: paper forms must be printed single-sided and the barcode must be clearly readable
If your passport is close to expiring, renew it first. A new passport number means a new visa application. See our passport renewal service.
Can I get an India visa faster?
There is no official “rush” option for a regular India visa. The fastest legal route for most US travelers is the eVisa, submitted correctly the first time.
For true family emergencies, VFS Global may accept in-person applications by appointment, including on weekends and holidays. This applies to US passport holders of Indian origin and their family members, with proof of the emergency and an extra fee.
The most reliable way to save time is to avoid a rejection. A rejected application means starting over, and that costs you days you may not have.
