Requirements To Obtain A VISA To Enter India
Passport Information
- Passport must be valid 6 months beyond intended stay.
- The original passport must be submitted and should have at least two blank visa pages for processing.
- Non U.S. Citizens must provide a notarized copy, front and back of a U.S. Green card or I-94; in order to have a visa processed.
- Beginning October 1st 2007, the visa application from must be completed online via the link that is provided below. The Indian Consulate will no longer accept traditional applications.
Tourist Visa
- Submit your valid, signed Passport, must have at least 6 months remaining.
- 1 Visa Application Form - Link - fully completed online and signed. - Visa applications must have a bar code upon completion. Applications without the barcode will not be accepted.
- 2 Passport-type photographs required.
- Copy of round trip airline tickets or itinerary, or letter of confirmation from travel agent
- If you are not a resident of the U.S. (do not possess a valid green card), please complete this from - Link
- A copy of the applicants drivers license - Applications will not be accepted without a valid copy.
- Effective 1/15/2010 U.S. applicants must provide a copy of either his or her Birth Certificate. All non U.S. Citizens must provide both a copy of his or her Birth Certificate and a Diploma.
- Naturalized U.S. Citizens who are of Indian origin, must provide School Diploma, Birth Certificate and a photo copy of his or her Indian Passport.
- India Letter of Authorization - Link
- The Visa Request Form - Link, is required for the completion of the visa.
- There is not a required time of entry in order to activate the visa, no 90 day rule, if it is not used before the expiration date, then it will expire.
Business Visa

- A Business Letter of Guarantee - Link is required, to be typewritten on your company letterhead and addressed to: Consulate General of India/Visa Section/ Houston TX., That must clearly explain the purpose of travel; Guarantee financial support for the visit and return transportation; the letter should be signed by an officer or manager of the company, other than the applicant. (Please request you desired length of visa within the body of the business letter of guarantee. The length of time selected on the application should match the what is requested in the letter of guarantee. (Example - If requesting 6month, 1year or 5 year.)
- Letter of Invite from the company you are visiting in India ( Fax copy is fine). The length of stay on the invitation must match what is on the application. Copy of round trip airline tickets or itinerary, or letter of confirmation from travel agent.

Work Visa
- Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond intended stay.
- All India Employment Visa applications requests must have all information completed prior to submission. If documents are missing once submitted to the consulate, the consulate reserves the right to deny any visa request and all consular fees will not be returned.

- 2 Passport-type photographs required
- Effective 1/15/2010 U.S. applicants must provide a copy of either his or her Birth Certificate. All non U.S. Citizens must provide both a copy of his or her Birth Certificate and a Diploma.

- Employment contract approved by the Indian government (it must include length of employment, more than sufficient amount of salary, type of work) the contract must be signed by the applicant.
- Letter of Invite from the company you are visiting in India ( Fax copy is fine). The length of stay on the invitation must match what is on the application. Copy of round trip airline tickets or itinerary, or letter of confirmation from travel agent.

- A recent copy of the applicants resume.
- A copy of the organizations proof of corporate registration in India.

- Tax ID letter from the company in India on the company letter head from India that states and certifies the following information:
- Foreigners being hired will not exceed 1% of the total workforce. Within 1% it should not exceed more than 20 employees. In case the number of employees is within 1% but moor ethan 20 employees, applicants would understand that there may be a delay in decisions made on the issuance of the visa.
- The letter must contain the employees name and the TAX ID number and the state that the company will be responsible for any taxes accrued while working in India.
- Your visit to India must be completed prior to the expiration of the visa, or prior to end of the period of stay granted by India Immigration authorities, whichever comes first.
- Vaccinations - International Certificate of Vaccination required for Yellow Fever if Arriving from Infected Area within 5 days.

- An Employment Visa is granted to those who are an employee of an Indian company. The Embassy/Consulate may grant Employment visa valid for a year irrespective of the duration of the contract. Further extension up to 5 years could be obtained from MHA/FRRO in the concerned state in India. Please note the visa is valid beginning on the day it is issued. So a 6 Month visa issued on January 1 would be valid until June 30. Application: Complete the online India Visa Application.
- Short Term Visa Holders: Applicants who are not citizens/residents of the USA and hold a tourist or other short-term visa for the USA should normally apply for Indian visas in the country of their permanent residence. In case of emergency or special circumstance, an application could be made at the Indian Embassy in Washington DC or Consulates General of India in the USA. In addition to the relevant visa fee there is a reference fee of $20.00 for reference to be made to the country of their original residence. The processing time in such cases is usually 5-7 working days. (Non US Citizens - Short Term Visa Holders Only)
- Persons of Indian Origin: Applicants born in India applying for the first time on ANY U.S. passport must submit their Indian passport and a completed renunciation form (http://indiavisa.travisaoutsourcing.com/pdf/renunciation.pdf) OR submit their expired US passport with a previously issued Indian visa if applicable. (United States Citizens Only)
- Dual Citizenship: Applicants who have dual citizenship with the US and another country must apply on their US passport if living in the US. (Non US Citizens Only)
- Long Term Visa Holders Registration:

List of documents required at the time of registration with the Foreigners Registration Officer.
(i) Photocopy of the passport and initial visa.
(ii) Four photographs of the applicant.
(iii) Details of residence in India.
(iv) HIV test report from one of the WHO recognized institutions from people in the age group of 15 to 60 years, if the foreigner is visiting India on a visa for more than one year.
(v) Copy of the marriage certificate in case of those seeking extension of stay on grounds of being married to an Indian national.
(vi) Bona-fide certificate from the University/college/institution in case of student visa.
(vii) Accreditation certificate from the Press Information Bureau in case of Journalist visa.
(viii) Approval of the Department of Company Affairs in the case of board level appointees in Public limited companies.
(ix) Two copies of the approval of Government of India in case of a joint venture or a collaboration.
(x) Terms and conditions of appointments and copy of contract or agreements, in case of employment visa.
(xi) Undertaking (in the format given below) from the concerned Indian company on the following lines in case of employment/business visa: -

Q. Do I need to send you my passport in order to receive a visa?
A. Yes, your passport must be submitted with the required paperwork and photos in order to obtain a visa for traveling outside the USA. For visa service in Houston, you can drop off your passport at our agency.
All U.S. Citizens who are traveling by air will now be required to carry a U.S. Passport.
Adults over 19 years of age will require a passport if traveling outside the U.S. by car, including Canada and Mexico.
U.S. Citizens 19 and under do not require a U.S. Passport if they are traveling outside the U.S. by land or sea.
Closed Loop Cruises: U.S. Citizens who board a cruise ship at a port within the United States, travel only within the Western Hemisphere, and return to the same U.S. port on the same ship may present government-issued photo identification, along with proof of citizenship (an original birth certificate or a Consular report of Birth Abroad, or a Certificate of Naturalization).
